So another year has flown by.

I didn't set any resolutions and to be honest I have just continued per normal.

One thing I'd like to do this year tho is make an event of each of the special days there are out there - sometimes its too easy just to sit at home and bum around - this year I would like to try and make the most of it.

Oh My Goodness

well finally!! my internet is up and running.

it has been oh so long but it has been so busy i haven't had too much of a chance to miss it!

in the last 3 weeks i have moved states, started in a new office, moved into a new place, put up my decorations and caught up with friends and family i have not seen in forever.

it's been fun and stressful all at the same time.

this isn't my tree (above)...hopefully when i find the cord to my imac i will start blogging properly again and load up a picture of mine.

Grey Days

...so the Buddhist proverb goes.

There have been so many times in my life where this has happened and I am also a big believer in everything happening for a reason.

Which is why it was a little bizaare that today when I was catching up on some blogs I came across this post.

It was only this morning that I sent my (younger) sister a text:
"At 33 u can look forward to being totally grey. I am and I spoke to mum and she said she went grey when I was around 12...yep...33"

The last few days I cannot get over at how many greys have sprouted up. Its amazing how one day you are a teenager and the next day a chick in her thirties going grey and purchasing Keihl's Double Strength Deep Wrinkle Filler!!!

So anyway after a bit of back and forth we had agreed we would both start gradually going platinum (mum rocks the grey and gave up dying a few years back much to our shock and horror).

Maybe times are changing? The thing is, it's not so much the lack of colour that I find concerning but the texture the hair goes... whats with the wiriness?

Anyway, that's my latest dilema. Should I just rock the look too? Whatcha think?

I've fallen off the radar of late as it was decided a week or two ago that my job would be relocating from Sydney to Brisbane. All of a sudden I'm planning, trying to find a new place to live, packing my stuff up... the list goes on.

I have been out of the blog world a bit the last week or so. Just feeling a bit off and spending some time just reading, watching rubgy, relaxing and just staying away from my computer.

However, I have been taking some photos... so here is a run down of the last two weeks.

Pretty manicures. I have been seeing this all over the place (I think originally on Cupcakes and Cashmere). This is Esse Boat House with OPI Katy Perry Sparkle. I love it but the boy was like "what's with your nails??". Maybe it's a girl thing.

Reading "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin. Really enjoying it and finding it very inspiring. I would highly recommend.

And Miss Tallulah. Always the little rascal. Here she looks like a statue but in real life she runs about like a crazy thing. (in the background on the right you can see her flea. she loves to "kill" this and will do Jean Claude Van Dam moves on it. everyday i come home and she has carried it from downstairs to upstairs. she totally cracks me up)

It's amazing how it just shows that it doesn't matter what age you are.

Put yourself out there and love life.

Watching this video made me think of my Grandma. She was always a little kooky and I hope I'm just the same! Life is about doing what you please without worrying about what anyone else thinks.

I want to be just like her and be the person who pulls out my tap shoes for an impromtu show when visitors pop around or get into my leotard and do yoga with my grandkids.

I think in life people are drawn to your energy. It doesn't matter what your style is(be it clothes or personality or anything else), as long as you own it and love it, people will always be attracted to the fact that you are what you are and aren't ashamed to just be you.

I am loving these photographs from NYFW by Jeannine Tan of papertissue. Can you believe she is just 17 years old? Jeannie was flown to NYFW (from her hometown Melbourne, Australia) as part of the Tumblr20 - an initiative by tumblr to bring 20 of their top fashion bloggers from around the world to cover fashion week.

The photos are from the Jeremy Scott show and i think the freckles are totally fabulous. I also think the hair and eyeliner are pretty great too!

Doggie Rescue

I thought today I would a post about the private registered charity "Monika's Doggie Rescue". This charity is based in Sydney and are all about saving and re-homing as many dogs as they can from the council pounds.

How it Works: Dogs rescued from the pound are microchipped, heartworm tested and vaccinated by a veterinarian. They are also given a basic health check and desexed (if required) and given any additional veterinary treatment to return them to good health.

All of the rescued dogs are then cared for, awaiting adoption into a permanent loving home. Once the dogs have completed 8-10 days quarantine they are placed into a foster home.

The charity usually place on average three dogs per day and at any one time they have over 200 dogs up for adoption!!

Doggie Rescue saves more than 600 dogs each year from death row from council pounds and to date has saved more than 9,500 dogs!!

This is brilliant but they need help!

If you live in Sydney (or even if you don't?) you can help in 5 different ways:

♥Adopt a dog (rather than buying from a pet shop!!) from Doggie Rescue. You can do so here.

♥Foster a dog - Doggierescue has recently lost its animal shelter and they have struggled to find suitable replacement premises. In the meantime they are totally reliant on foster carers to offer our rescue dogs a temporary home. Often this is only for a few weeks, or months. If you are not currently able to commit to adopting a pet please consider fostering a doggie– it’s an incredibly rewarding experience and YOU could make a huge difference! Without foster homes, they are in the terrible predicament of being forced to drive away, leaving dogs behind to die on death row.

♥Become a volunteer - Rescuing dogs means there is always a lot of work to do. Join the dedicated team of volunteers who are always in desperate need of extra hands to help care for the doggies.

♥Say NO to pet shops - With tens of thousands of dogs destroyed in NSW alone each year why breed more just for commercial gain? Tell your friends and family about Doggierescue and you can be responsible for saving a life!

♥Make a donation.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all do our little bit to help?.

Please pass on the news of the great work Doggie Rescue is doing in the community!!

And if you live elsewhere or dogs aren't your thing (maybe helping some kitties is??, try looking into how you can help in your own city or what animal shelters are around where you live that may need your help!!

♥In preparation for the upcoming warmer weather make some summery ice cubes. It's pretty straightforward but steps can be found here.

♥Pack your bags and go on a last minute road trip. Wind the windows down, let your hair out and just drive. Do it Thelma & Louise style with a girlfriend (minus the drama of course!!), with your special someone or just on your own! Find a lovely little place to stay the night and try out the local restaurant. Walk about and appreciate the different sights. Don't forget to take some photos of your spontaneous adventure.

♥Take your older sheets and towels to your local animal shelter or vet store. It is so easy to accumulate things that we don't really use all that often. Put them to better use by giving them away to a wonderful creature who needs them more than you do. Sharing is caring and wouldn't you like to know you have made a teeny difference for a sweet animal?

♥Create a mixed tape for your loved one. Make sure you include some sappy songs, some dance ones, some "sexy time" tunes and don't forget that special one that makes you think of them every time you hear it (hello my gorgeous boy - Lovely Day - Bill Withers - xx ). If you're single - burn one for yourself - make it the soundtrack of your life and make it rock.

♥Treat yourself to a late night pudding excursion. When the mood strikes, put your shoes on and head out for a super sweet, totally decadent, scrummy dessert. If you're not in an area where you can pop out late, make yourself the biggest sweet feast imaginable and savour every last mouthful. Go to bed with a big belly and a smile on your face.

I am addicted to Pinterest. It is so easy to waste time on that site.

My problem is I want to pin so many lovely things that I restrain myself and then when I want to find the image again I never can :(

Anyway, this one came up again today - it's a sweet idea.

You could instead also do one up with 52 different quotes, or 52 affirmations...the list goes on.

I would buy some lovely cards and some pretty stickers like these to make mine.

And speaking of Pinterest here is a great interview with co-founder Ben Silbermann on HGTV.

Here are some things to give a whirl this week

♥Make a disco vase. Easy peasy. Everyone needs more sparkle in their life!

♥Just like in the movie Bridesmaids, make A cupcake. Not a whole batch, just one itsy bitsy little one "just for moi". The whole thing seems rather decadent however, I suppose if you don't enjoy cooking (which in a way I don't!) it's more like a pain in the *** to whip up only one...but still....I like the idea of it.
Plus I found a cheats way of doing it here. It's called a Chocolate Mug of Sadness. Whatever...it's got Nutella in it...works for me!
ps. i'd add some vanilla butter cream icing to this with some sprinkles for good luck.

♥It's getting close to summer time here, so this one is kinda ridiculous but as crocheting is on my Day Zero list of things to do - why not? Whip yourself up a crochet scarf - House of Holland style - and save yourself 400 pounds :) OR whip up a whole blankie!! pass it down as a keepsake for generations to come (or not... in my case i don't think so - my last attempt at knitting ended up being a blanket for miss Daisy).

♥Dress up in a leotard and some leg warmers and watch the final dance scene of flashdance over and over until you know the dance sequence back to front. Do a "suprise" performance for your roommates & or partner. Extra points if you jump on the dining table and kick dinner off it. What A Feeling!

♥Give yourself an erratic manicure. I was at a store last Thursday and the guy that served me had a similar thing going on. If guys in shops have got this look down pat, it's time I rocked it too.

ah... a fresh start! feeling very pleased with myself after a relaxing wkend.

yesterday was a gorgeous day in Sydney and we headed down to Clovelly for a bit.

i'm trying to look after myself a bit better so went to the gym for a (very) short while yesterday and trying to cut back on the afternoon chocolate fix so i picked up some yoghurt for snacks.

I adore adore adore Otis Reading. His music reminds me of growing up and coming home from school and having the home stereo blasting (both my parents l-o-v-e-d music) with this and so many others...Roberta Flack, Bee Gees, Billy Holiday, Credence Clearwater...the list goes on...
Music is up there with smells with its ability to take you straight back to a special time and wonderful memories.

I know sometimes people don't like remixes but I don't mind Jay Z & Kanye's mix "Otis" directed by Spike Jonze. Kudos to them for picking such a brilliant song... the only thing I don't like is the yelling at the end...:(

I know it's a waste of money, excessive and totally over the top to trash such an expensive car, especially when there are so many without but sometimes you just have to put it all to the back of your mind and just enjoy for what it it...plus..it gets people talking right? plus...it is a HOT car.

Ok, here is a list of things to try out this week:

♥Try out the Thailander ice tea (from The Lychee Lounge at West End in Brisbane). This cocktail is A-MAZ-ING and my absolute favourite however I have never found another place who made it.. until today... i tracked down the recipe online. yee ha!

The Thailander (tropical)
An original recipe from Dustin Davis, Salon (Teneriffe).
A perfect drink for a balmy Brisbane evening, The Thailander captures the essence of its tropical namesake with its blend of coconut, lime and a kick of chilli.
Equipment
High ball glass
Muddler
Ingredients
Half a small lime cut into four pieces
Tablespoon of sugar or 15ml sugar syrup
30ml chilli and kaffir lime leaf infused vodka
30ml Malibu
Lemonade
Method
Place lime and sugar into a tall glass and muddle to extract juice.
Add infused vodka, Malibu and ice then top with lemonade.
Garnish with a fresh red chilli.
YUMMMMMM

♥Rather than be sad at the end of the day because of all the things you coulda, shoulda, woulda...start an "I Did It" list.

I'm not sure if I should be ashamed to admit it or not, but when this movie came out (in 1995) I saw it three (3!!) times at the cinema.

You could say I was slightly obsessed with the movie..is that sad??

I remember watching it on video so many times and taking note of all the outfits Cher wore. I was always putting together similar outfits and wearing socks up to my knees for weekend parties **blush**

If only I'd had this 60second clip back then as a cheats guide ;)

Five Daily Essentials

I thought today I'd write a list of my five daily "essentials". Obviously I could live without these if I had to, but on a day to day basis they are very much needed!

1. My iphone - how could I go without phone, text, internet, facebook, music and a camera on a daily basis?? The only thing that my BB does better is messaging...

2. Coffee - this is one of the last things I would give up and if I ever had to I don't know what I would do. I go to these Italian boys on the corner near where I work during the week and any of the local cafes on the weekend. I've also just recently picked up a Nespresso for home.

3. My watch - I know most people look at their phones for the time these days but I like it old school...on my wrist.

4. Lipbalm - I have too many on me at any one time to mention. Some faves are Keihls & Mac.

5. My diary - An 11 year old Filofax. Again I'm not a fan of the electronic types... I like it tangible.

I was excited to see that two of my "regular reads" had come together.

The Coveteur recently photographed the new offices of WhoWhatWear.

The offices are gorgeous and if I had my own workspace this is how I would like it styled.

My favourite parts of the space were the vintage side table, the nailpolish display, the cane chairs & the Dallas Shaw print.

My only gripe about "styled shoots" is that they move the same items around. What I really want to see is how it looks everyday but oh well...still looks great!

Its funny how sometimes blog world is a little like the yellow brick road...

You can start somewhere, make a few clicks, then end up finding a little nugget that just makes your day.

Today i started on Apartment Therapy's re-nest, with How to Identify Clutter.
From here I started clicking and eventually I ended up on The Happiness Project and this particular post back in 2006.

This post couldn't have been any closer to my life than if I'd written it myself.

I'm sure it goes back to having OCD but it's a timely reminder to stop "saving stuff" and "spend out"

I have drawers and drawers of underwear, clothes, stationery, makeup, beauty products, jewellery (the list goes on!) that i "save" for occasions that never come!

Doing this is rather wasteful and like Gretchen writes, it is better to enjoy those items now while you can.

I have all these gorgeous goodies, yet day in day out I use the "old stuff" so as not to ruin my lovely things - how absurd! Even the comment about holding out creatively was spot on.. I don't know how many times I think about blogging something then change my mind because I'll save it for another time.

The madness needs to stop! :)

Today, I am going to try and make the most of all my lovely possessions that I have worked so hard for instead of waiting for that rainy day.

What about you guys? Do you hoard stuff too? If so, what?

I feel like I've been very lazy of late.

I saw this image today and felt that it was a timely reminder that I should be getting more done each day.

For one, I need to start getting to the gym more. Early 30s are starting to catch up with me and it's just not as easy to keep weight off. Might start with a spin class tonight.

I also need to finish my latest subject.

At least that way, I'll have something more to add to the resume and be ready once Summer rolls around.

why oh why do companies go and discontinue amazing products and colours?

my latest love lost is Becca's SPF Mineral (oil free) primer.

being the nerd that I am, I wrote to the company to find out why I cannot get this brilliant stuff anymore. I was advised that it is unavailable indefinitely as they are in the process of reformulating...

my first reaction - Noooooooo!!!

but i suppose i can hold onto the hope that it is just "unavailable indefinitely" rather than "discontinued"??

lets hope they get this stuff back on the shelves. there is no other better

This home was one of my (many) favourites from this years Apartment Therapy Small Cool 2011 contest.

The home belongs to Paul who lives in NY. This place is only 350 square feet! I think it is amazing what he has done with his place.

i've been listening to lots of fleetwood mac lately.

these guys are up there as my favourite bands. i love how every song that comes on i'm like "oh no! no! THIS ONE is my favourite..."

it always blows me away how you can listen to music and it can take you back instantly to another time. i hear their songs and i just think of my mum and dad and growing up.

I love oreos, so the idea that there is another type of biscuit batter around it, is pretty exciting (especially seeing its around 3.30 in the afternoon and I am craving something sweet at this very moment).

Lately I have been doing the american thing and dipping the oreos in ice cold milk. very yum.. however I can't decide tho if it is as good as two tips off a tim tam with coffee...

I saw this article on renest this morning and wanted to repost so 1. so it serves as a reminder for me to do and 2. share with others who may have missed it.

Plus it reminds me of the brilliant movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off

"It's often hard to fit in a two week holiday around everyday commitments, so I like the idea of getting all the benefits of one in just 1 day. I like the idea of mixing a bit of activity with a bit of relaxing.

Not all of us have the time, flexibility, or resources to take an extended vacation, but you can reap the benefits of time away (rest, relaxation, entertainment, new experiences) by following a super-powered one-day vacation plan. Think of it like taking a multi-vitamin: it may not be as as good as the original (getting your vitamins by actually eating real fruits and vegetables), but it's still a nutritional powerhouse that's also convenient and affordable.

How To Condense a Two-Week Vacation Into a Single Day

1. Set Aside One Day That Is Totally Open.
No work, no plans, no schedule. Maybe you decide to take next Wednesday off, or you pick a free Saturday next month. Just pick a day where you have nothing planned: no doctor's appointments, no chores, no dinner parties. Just a gloriously empty day full of potential. (Does that freak you out? Some people hate having empty days on their calendar. I think that's the greatest gift of all.)

2. Take a Media Fast.

Since I work online all day, one of the main things I tried to do on my vacation (with some success) was unplug and go offline. Now, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with media—goodness knows I love the tech in my life! And likewise, you're probably thinking, "Woh.. Slow down, Nellie. That's how I relax! I watch movies, I read blogs, I shop online. Why do I need to give it up?" As Maxwell wrote in The Eight-Step Home Cure, media is ubiquitious, and if you give yourself a chance to live without it, you will "inevitably find yourself with time that is unfilled and now yours to spend in new ways." And since the point of a vacation of any length of time is to get away from daily life, that means getting away from our regular, daily routines. You have all the time in the world to watch movies on Netflix or check Facebook. You only have one day to do something special, something different, that'll make you feel like you've had a real break.

3. Decide What Kind of Vacation Person You Are.

There are two types of vacation people: those who prefer doing something (sightseeing, hiking, snorkeling, shopping) and those who prefer doing nothing (lying on a beach, reading, vegging). For your one-day vacation, decide which of these two areas sounds more appealing, and tailor your day around that.

For active people: Make a list of all the things in your area you've wanted to visit, see, or do but haven't gotten around to, and pick one. (I've lived in New York for six years, and I'll only be here for another two. I'm now realizing that time is running out, and there are still a ton of New York-ey things I've yet to experience—certain museums, restaurants, concerts, theater, interesting historical or cultural sites— so I'm making a list and plan to knock them out one by one so that I don't regret anything when I finally leave.) Explore your city on two wheels or go on a foraging expedition. Take a class to cultivate your DIY skills. Go hiking. Get outside.

For relaxers: Are you someone who is looking to escape an active life? Then plan a restful day. Have a leisurely breakfast, curl up in a corner with a good book. Get a massage. Bake some cookies. Write in a journal. Sit outside in the sun with a cool glass of iced tea. Listen to music.

4. Treat Yourself Throughout the Day.

One of the fun things about vacation is the sense that you are free to indulge a little. You can do that on a micro level as well. Buy fresh flowers for your dining room table. Drink some wine. Take a bath. Savor some ice cream. Eat out at a nice restaurant. Have a date night with your significant other. NO GUILT ALLOWED.

But whatever you do make sure of one thing...

5. Only Do The Things You Really Want To Do.

Read: Don't Do Anything Merely Out Of Obligation.

This was the key to my vacation, I discovered. I went away with a list of things I thought I needed to accomplish, because I'd have this expanse of time and I needed to "use it wisely." I realized, though, that this list was stressing me out. It was staring me in the face, and the more I thought about the things I "needed to be doing" the more my vacation was feeling like my regular ol' life! It was only when I let go of those expectations and focused on the things I truly wanted to do that I began to relax and enjoy myself.

This is not the time to catch up on your chores, to answer all your emails, to weed the garden. Ask yourself this question: do I feel happiest doing this thing right now, or am I doing it out of a sense of obligation? Is there something else I would rather be doing? You may find that this is a particularly hard thing to do: it feels selfish to focus purely on what you want to be doing. But for one day, it's the key to feeling reinvigorated, rather than rundown.

Watermelon Mojito Popsicles

It's officially winter here in Australia - but when I saw this - I just had to repost.

Since moving, I now have a balcony again and I can imagine myself in Summer sitting out there with one!

Mojito Popsicles

Ingredients (makes about 10 medium size popsicles)
3 1/2 cups cubed watermelon
Handful fresh mint leaves
3 Tablespoons Agave (or you can sweeten them with regular sugar)
1/2 lime
2 oz. light rum
1/2 cup club soda

Directions
In a large mixing bowl, muddle the watermelon and mint together until the watermelon is a juice consistency with some small chunks. Once it's fully muddled, remove the muddled mint. Add the 3 tablespoons Agave, 2 ounces rum and squeeze the 1/2 lime into the watermelon juice. Pour half of the mixture into a cocktail shaker... unless you have a shaker large enough for all of the watermelon. Shake until combined and put into a separate bowl with a spout. Do the same with the other half of the juice. Add the club soda to the shaken juice and stir. Fill the popsicle tray up and add a skewer (cut to size) in the center. To garnish, place a small mint leaf in each of the popsicles... These will need to freeze overnight because of the rum. They also melt a little faster, so make sure you serve them with a napkin!
